“Learning Comes Through Play”

The Oak Bay Parent Owned Preschool follows the philosophy that "learning comes about through play". This is the foundation philosophy of the Vancouver Island Cooperative Preschool Association (VICPA), of which Oak Bay Preschool is a member.

Watch ECE Sue Mcgregor talk about the schools' philosophy.

Oak Bay Preschool's curriculum is provided by VICPA. Our curriculum is play-based and supports the social, emotional, physical and intellectual development of each child. Components include:

The program focuses on the development of the whole child, recognizing each child's unique learning style, abilities and developmental levels. It encourages group play, inclusiveness and positive interaction between children. Each child is encouraged to develop a sense of self worth and competency in a supportive atmosphere. We focus on child development rather than competition.

Parent involvement in the classroom plays an important role in establishing an atmosphere of safety and trust, which in turn encourages the development of children's self esteem. Oak Bay Preschool believes parent involvement in the classroom is enriching for both the parents and the children.

Oak Bay Preschool believes that a child's self esteem and ability to learn are interdependent.
