Frequently Asked Questions

Who will teach my children at Oak Bay Preschool?

Every preschool day a licensed Early Childhood Educator, certified Early Childhood Assistant, and duty parents will be there for your child.  We adhere to VICPA standards of enrollment, thus keeping the teacher-to-child ratio low.  This combination alined with our philosophy provides optimal learning outcomes for your child.

When are the classes?

The 3's class runs three hours, twice a week:  Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:15 - 12:15 pm.

The 4's class runs four hours, three times a week:  Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays from 9:15 - 1:15 pm.

There are 16 children in the 3's class and 18 children in the 4's class.  All classes are taught by the ECE, an EC assistant, and up to two parent assistants. Classes run from September to June.

What would a "typical day" be like for my child?

See Programs and Enrollment page for a typical schedule for both our classes.

Self-Directed Play Time: the opportunity for self-directed play begins upon arrival. Your child will have the chance to play in any or all of the different activity areas; dress-up, library, science, kitchen, arts, music, theatre and toys. This is a time when your child is free to move about the preschool to play and experiment, to create and interact with other children.

Tidy Up Time follows Free Play Time: children, parent assistants and the ECE all help tidy the activity areas.

Circle Time: The ECE engages the children in a more focused session with books, songs, stories, music and age-appropriate presentations.

Snack Time: children have nutritious, allergy friendly snacks provided by the parent assistants. Our classroom is dairy, egg, gluten and nut free.

Outside Time: after snacks, the children go outside for fresh air, where a play house, sand box and many toys await. There is a large enclosed space shaded by Garry Oaks; perfect for running, imaginary play and learning about nature. Parents pick up their children from the outside classroom.
